Summer 2009 Baseball Game Yokohama BayStars vs Yomiuri Giants

Last night, 25 students attended the Baseball Game held at the Yokohama Stadium. The seats were great, which made it worth staying even in the rain. Unfortunately the game was canceled after the 6th inning, but overall we all had a great time!

Fireworks Summer 2009

Every summer (End of July through August), fireworks displays and summer festivals are held at various places in Japan. Unfortunately, it is not possible to list all the summer festivals going on (there are just to many), but we have put together some information on a few of the major fireworks events in or near Tokyo (follow the link, “Read the rest of this entry”).

Summer 2009 Bento Workshop

Last Friday, students enjoyed learning how to make a basic Japanese Bento. The bento consisted of Japanese Sweet Egg Rolls, Pork Piccata, Carrot & Green Pepper Kimpira, Takosan Wiener, Onigiri, and Kanten. All items were able to be made using a only a cooking pan!

The Workshop was instructed by Ms.Keiko Katura and Ms. Asako Kishi. Ms. Katsura is a cooking producer and also has her own children’s cooking classes. Ms. Asako Kishi is a famous Food Journalist in Japan and is a regular on the Japanese variety show called “Hadakano Shyonen”. She is also well known for being an appointed judge on the “Iron Chef” show.

Summer 2009 Pacific Culture Club Workshop

Each semester, a group of TUJ students are invited to a traditional Japanese home on a secluded family estate to experience and practice some well-known traditional Japanese arts. During this half-day workshop, students witness and try their hand at ikebana (生花) or traditional Japanese flower arranging, strumming the strings of the koto (琴), which is Japan’s national instrument, shodo (書道) or calligraphy, and kitsuke (着付け), which is dressing up in kimono (着物).

After the workshop, several participants took a side-trip to Jindaiji Onsen, to experience the tradition and continuing popularity of relaxing in hot spa waters. This traditional Japanese onsen (温泉), which is conjoined to a Shinto Shrine, has a variety of atmospheric baths (a cave, a gazebo, a frozen-ice room, a sweltering hot sauna, etc.). Quite a day of traditional Japan!

Summer 2009 Taiko Workshop

Taiko is a modern form of Japanese drumming whose influence is growing internationally. During this 120 minute workshop on June 26th, a group of TUJ students learned basic taiko postures and drumming techniques to get a sense of what taiko is all about.

TUJ Summer Camp

On the weekend of June 20th, around 20 Japan-Admit and 20 Academic English Program students teamed up to have TUJ’s first Culture Exchange Program Summer Camp.

The students took a short bus ride to Doshi Mura in Yamanashi. During the two day event, everyone learned and experienced popular Japanese recreational games and team-building activities. We made mochi, had a great BBQ, enjoyed a bonfire, roasted marshmallows, and set off fireworks. Please enjoy all the pictures (under the cut)!
