Summer 2009 Pacific Culture Club Workshop
Each semester, a group of TUJ students are invited to a traditional Japanese home on a secluded family estate to experience and practice some well-known traditional Japanese arts. During this half-day workshop, students witness and try their hand at ikebana (生花) or traditional Japanese flower arranging, strumming the strings of the koto (琴), which is Japan’s national instrument, shodo (書道) or calligraphy, and kitsuke (着付け), which is dressing up in kimono (着物).
After the workshop, several participants took a side-trip to Jindaiji Onsen, to experience the tradition and continuing popularity of relaxing in hot spa waters. This traditional Japanese onsen (温泉), which is conjoined to a Shinto Shrine, has a variety of atmospheric baths (a cave, a gazebo, a frozen-ice room, a sweltering hot sauna, etc.). Quite a day of traditional Japan!
